Rack Placement Guidelines

NYC DOT reviews each location using the following criteria. Verify these before submitting or verifying a rack request.

Required clearances

Sidewalk width ≥ 12 feet — There must be at least 12 feet of clear pedestrian path remaining after the rack is installed.
4 feet from curb cut — Do not block wheelchair ramps or curb cuts.
8 feet from fire hydrant — Racks may not obstruct hydrant access.
15 feet from crosswalk or corner — Keep sight lines clear at intersections.

Good locations

  • Near entrances to retail stores, restaurants, and offices
  • Adjacent to transit stops (subway entrances, bus stops)
  • Outside libraries, parks, community centers, and schools
  • In commercial corridors with high bicycle traffic

Locations to avoid

Loading zones and bus stops
In front of fire escapes or building exits
Within 5 feet of a subway grate or utility access
Blocking storefront windows or signage (without owner approval)
